You know, I don't think I have a favorite salvia, but once I retire I would really like to jump into growing them. They are so suited to our climate and soils and seem to bloom all the time. There are so many great species and varieties. And, with just one to two prunings per year, you can keep them looking great. For example, we have some Salvia leucantha plants that we only cut back to ground every January. They grow back to 4 or 5 feet tall the following year and bloom from Spring to Winter.
