  • Gardening Background

  • Biographical Information
After life in Louisiana and California, I moved to Mississippi, though I maintain close ties to both Baton Rouge and New Orleans. I am a writer, radio host, and photographer by trade, and a gardener by passion. My husband and I together have 4 children, 3 cats, and a decidedly eccentric plant collection.
  • My Mulch Profile

  • Website

  • Occupation
    garden writer and radio host
  • Gardening Ability
    6 - Gardening Professional
  • My 5 favorite plants are
sweet olive tree, copper iris, any hibiscus, night blooming cereus, and zinnia
  • What is a garden myth you hear frequently which you know is untrue?
You must paint pruned surfaces on shrubs and trees.
  • And, what is the reality?
Not so! Anerobic bacteria inside the stem will thrive in the oxygen-deprived environment you've created by sealing it up. The branch is more likely to rot if painted.
  • What is your favorite gardening outfit or costume?
In these days of west nile and melanoma, it's the fine aroma of repellant and sunscreen! Besides them, I wear loose, thin cotton clothing, a hat, and gloves when I remember.
  • What is the one question about gardening you would really like people to ask you?
What have you learned from gardening?
  • And what's the answer?
Something new every day, and alot about patience.
  • Who is your own favorite gardening personality on TV, radio or in print? Why?
Jeff Lowenfels, the longest running newspaper columnist in the US, and author of Teaming with Microbes. This book brings the science of organics and the soil food web to everyone's bedside table and Jeff is a hoot.
  • Do you have a gardening philosophy you would like to share with other gardeners? What is it?
Embrace the organic attitude, walk the garden everyday, and don't be ashamed to hire someone to do the chores you really hate.
  • If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
    Tomatoes, of course!
  • What plant have you tried to grow that has given you the most trouble? Or, what plant would you like to grow and can't, and why?
Though I grow scores of different plants, I have never been good with good ol' cleomes. They seem to be bug traps in my garden, which has advantages but ruins the flowers and my mood.
  • What is your favorite time in the garden?
    early morning
  • What is your favorite color in the garden?
    Green in every hue.
  • What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
I like to sit in the courtyard, admiring the work I've just done.
  • What is your favorite public or private garden in the world? Why?
Hortus Bulborum in Linnen, the Netherlands. This garden is the repository for every tulip variety ever grown.
  • What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
My grandfather, Tom Evans, taught me to garden in the middle of the last century. I carry my hoe around with me, just as he did, trying always to catch that weed while it's small. He showed me how to find earthworms for fishing in the leaf pile, too.
  • Gardening Dilemmas
    heavy soil
    hot, humid nights
    hurricanes and tornadoes
  • What do you dislike most about gardening?
Squirrels who eat my tomatoes before I can!
  • What do you like most about gardening?
Watching anything grow is immensely satisfying, especially if I planted it.
