  • Gardening Background

  • Biographical Information
As a passionate gardener, my art is as intricately entwined as the gardens surrounding my studio. Cultivating and tending these gardens is the first stage of creating the art that grows in my studio.

Flowers represent to me a microcosm of the universe in their cycles of living and loving, families and relationships as well as their quest for survival and eventual senescence and rebirth.

With a duality of external and internal vision, I invite the viewer to see, larger than life, the beauty and intricacy of flowers and in their boldness I suggest a contemplation of their relevance and ours in the social order of our universe.

Most of my garden is in varying levels of shade & I have well over a thousand flowering plants of different species & cultivars.

Hiking clothes since they are quick dry.
  • What is the one question about gardening you would really like people to ask you?
How does gardening influence your art work?
  • And what's the answer?
This is a very complex answer since it includes among other things the visual, tactile, color, texture, composition, spiritual, political & philosophical issues & categories.
  • Do you have a gardening philosophy you would like to share with other gardeners? What is it?
Creating a painting composition and designing a garden are quite similar in concept. The same issues of focus, rhythm, texture, scale, navigation & color are there in each.
  • If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
I could never grow just one plant or love just one child.

Roses. I don’t have enough sun.

My Uncle Teddy introduced me to gardening when I was a little girl. I was from Brooklyn where there was lots of brick & concrete & he taught me that everything around him in his garden was alive.
  • Gardening Dilemmas
I’m facing a need to create a plan to reduce my manual labor in the garden but I don’t want to.
  • What do you dislike most about gardening?
    Mosquitoes
  • What do you like most about gardening?
I love smelling the warm moist soil of my garden as I step outside each day.
