Prunus armeniaca x domestica ssp. aprium 'Cot-N-Candy'
Aprium
Notes | Forum | Comment | 1* 0* 1* 0* 0

Cot-N-Candy is a trademarked Dave Wilson Nursery introduction for 2008, a white, very sweet aprium. Hybrid of apricot and plum. A multi-stemmed, shrubby, small tree with a spreading crown, reaching up to 20 feet tall. The fruit is an edible fleshy yellow fruit resembles an apricot but is juicier and has a bit of a plum flavor. Ripens in late spring or early summer.

I love this plant, but it just uses too much water in my garden :(

  • Gardening Background

  • Biographical Information
I'm a gardener. I just love plants, gardens and the people who like plants and gardens.

I have been involved in plants and gardens my whole life. From native plants to collectable plants and all of those in between, I enjoy sharing what I have learned and learning what I don't know. I am a professional horticulturist, managing one of the nation's busiest and best known garden centers, Roger's Gardens in coastal Orange County, CA.

I hope to help people discover the virtues of gardening as well as the value of plants to the planet and to our lives. In addition to being a garden center manager, I am a speaker and writer. My gardening passions continue to evolve but currently reside in the genus Oxalis, especially the South African species (no kidding), Ipheion, Eucomis, etc.

Issues I am interested in include the introduction and appreciation of more climate appropriate plants, reduced green waste, groundwater concerns, the new botanical garden at the Great Park in Orange County and the ever changing "California" garden from a style perspective.

  • Occupation
    Nursery General Manager
  • Gardening Ability
    6 - Gardening Professional
  • My 5 favorite plants are
This week: Oxalis, Ipheion, Lachenalia, Euphorbia, Paramongia. Succulents, especially dwarf Agave and Aloe.
  • If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
    Oxalis - seriously.
  • What is your favorite time in the garden?
The fall (aboput October and November). In southern California this is the beginning of the prime season. It is when Mediterranean plants are waking up again and preparing for their season of growth, flowering and reproduction.
It is the time when the temperatures are perfect for so many plants, as well as the gardener.
  • What is your favorite color in the garden?
Green and all of its derivations.
  • What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
At my collection tables of unusual or rare plants; especially when I notice something unexpected about a plant that I had overlooked previously.
  • What is your favorite public or private garden in the world? Why?
RHS Wisley, outside of London is hard to beat.
  • Gardening Dilemmas
How to afford all the plants that I want, and how to find the space and time to grow them.
  • What do you dislike most about gardening?
Gardeners who do not follow responsible practices to protect and conserve our resources, including water, runoff, green waste, watershed pollution, and so on. As gardeners in our own gardens, we have a responsibility to the larger "garden" that we all share.
  • What do you like most about gardening?
Finding new plants that I have not grown or experienced before and then sharing my experiences with others.
  • Company/Organization
    Roger's Gardens
  • Favorite Nursery
Of course Roger's Gardens. Otherwise, my personal likes are usually mail-order suppliers. Of the fairly mainstrean suppliers I especially like Yucca Do Nursery, Plant Delights, Telos Rare Bulbs and Asiatica Nursery.

  • Favorite Quote
When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.
    John Muir
